Kiera Powell, Carewell's consulting nurse, shares her expertise on health-related resources and products for the benefit of the caregiving community. Today she shares resources and information to help guide someone looking for products to promote skin health when using incontinence products.
Question: I'm looking for a skin protectant without zinc oxide or petroleum jelly, possibly silicone-based. I have a lot of allergies, and I want something to help protect my skin when I wear incontinence products. Can you help?
Kiera's Answer: Absolutely! If the goal is for preventative skin care, you may want to try something similar to baby powder to help with moisture absorption. I'd also like to share a few products that you might try. The main ingredient in each of these is Dimethicone.
Dimethicone belongs to the same group of compounds that are referred to as silicone-based—it's a common ingredient in moisturizers that helps to create a barrier to skin. I recommend spot-testing a small area if you choose to use any of the products to assess how it reacts with your skin.
